From cooperative to company

Many of South Africa’s large agribusinesses began as farmers’ cooperatives, where farmers pooled resources to store and sell grain and buy inputs together. Over time, many of these cooperatives converted into companies. VKB follows that pattern, serving farmers through grain silos, input supplies, mechanisation, financing and processing.

Why an agribusiness needs accountants

VKB funds a deliberately broad spread of fields, because a large agribusiness needs far more than farming skills. Accountants manage the finances of a multi-division group; risk managers and quantitative analysts handle grain price, weather and credit risk; economists study markets; and quantity surveyors manage the cost of building silos, stores and processing plants. Past VKB bursaries have also covered engineering, agricultural economics and international trade and marketing.

English and Afrikaans

VKB operates in English- and Afrikaans-speaking rural communities, so its bursary requires fluency in both languages. Bursars must also be willing to relocate after their studies for employment or work-back, since VKB’s operations are spread across rural towns.

The 2027 bursary

VKB’s 2027 bursary covers BCom Accountancy and Management Accountancy, BCom Economic Sciences, BCom Risk Management, BSc Quantitative Risk Management and BSc Quantity Surveying. VKB offers full study support to selected students, with vacation work at a VKB regional head office during university holidays. Applicants must be South African citizens in or past first year at an accredited institution, with at least a 60% average in major subjects.
