Magalies Water is the state-owned water board that supplies bulk water to municipalities and mines across the North West, Limpopo and Gauteng from its headquarters in Rustenburg. Each year it funds a small group of students in the engineering, science and water care fields it needs to run its treatment plants and pipelines.

About the Magalies Water Bursary

The bursary funds full-time study at a registered South African university, university of technology or TVET college and covers tuition, books, accommodation and an allowance, with vacation work at Magalies Water. Fields and qualification levels for 2027 are:

  • Biotechnology or microbiology: degree or NQF 6 diploma.
  • Chemistry or analytical chemistry: degree or NQF 6 diploma.
  • Civil, electrical and mechanical engineering: degree, NQF 6 diploma or N4 to N6 certificates.
  • Information and communication technology: degree.
  • Water care: advanced diploma or NQF 6 diploma.

Magalies Water Bursary eligibility requirements

  • South African citizen aged 18 to 35.
  • In Matric, or have completed Matric, with an overall average of at least 65%.
  • Studying, or accepted, for full-time study in one of the fields above at a registered South African institution.
  • Preference for women, previously disadvantaged applicants and people with disabilities.

How to apply for the Magalies Water Bursary

  1. Download the application form from magalieswater.co.za and complete it.
  2. Attach certified copies of: your ID; your Grade 11 and Matric results, or your Matric certificate; your most recent academic records on the institution’s letterhead if you are already studying; and proof of acceptance or provisional acceptance for 2027.
  3. Email everything to bursaries@magalieswater.co.za with the subject line “Magalies Water Bursary 2027” before 23 October 2026.
  4. Shortlisted candidates are contacted within 60 days of the closing date for interviews.
