Joe Morolong Local Municipality in the Northern Cape, which covers the villages around Hotazel, Churchill and Heuningvlei, runs a bursary funded by Assmang’s Black Rock Mine Operations, the manganese mine on its doorstep. It pays for local school leavers to study full-time at public universities and universities of technology in both technical and non-technical fields.
About the Joe Morolong Assmang Bursary
- Full-time undergraduate study at an accredited public university or university of technology.
- Technical fields such as engineering, mining, geology and the sciences, and non-technical fields such as commerce, education and the humanities.
- Covers tuition and related study costs, subject to a means test.
Joe Morolong Bursary eligibility requirements
- South African citizen aged 17 to 35, living in the Joe Morolong municipal area.
- In Matric or completed Matric.
- Science and engineering fields: at least level 5 (60%) in Mathematics and Physical Science. Other fields: a 60% overall average.
- From a historically disadvantaged background, with financial need confirmed by a means test.
- Not holding another bursary or student loan. Preference for students at historically disadvantaged institutions.
How to apply for the Joe Morolong Bursary
- Download the application form from joemorolong.gov.za when the advert appears.
- Attach a certified ID, your Grade 11 and Matric results, full academic transcripts if you are already studying, proof of acceptance at a tertiary institution, your parents’ or guardians’ certified IDs, proof of their income (payslips, an affidavit or SASSA documents) and proof of residence from the municipality or tribal office.
- Email everything to bursary@joemorolong.gov.za with the subject line “Joe Morolong Bursary 2027” before the closing date.
