The Cape Winelands District Municipality, which covers Stellenbosch, Drakenstein, Breede Valley, Witzenberg and Langeberg, once ran a Mayoral Bursary for residents studying at public universities and colleges. The programme has been discontinued, so this page explains what it offered and, more usefully, which bursaries students in the district can still apply for.
What the Cape Winelands Mayoral Bursary offered
- Contributions towards tuition for residents of the district studying at public universities, universities of technology and TVET colleges.
- Preference for scarce skills and for applicants from poor households.
- Applications were hand-delivered to the district offices in Stellenbosch each year before the academic year started.
Municipal bursaries still open to Cape Winelands residents
- Breede Valley Municipality Mayoral Bursary for Worcester, Rawsonville, De Doorns and Touwsrivier, closing in early December.
- Drakenstein Municipality bursary for Paarl and Wellington.
- Stellenbosch Municipality bursary for Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

- NSFAS for households earning R350 000 or less; 2027 applications opened on 18 September 2026 and close on 31 October 2026.
- ISFAP for the missing middle, closing 31 October 2026.
- Masakh’iSizwe bursary for engineering and built environment students at UCT, Stellenbosch and CPUT.
- Western Cape Department of Agriculture bursary and the Elsenburg bursary (30 September 2026) for agriculture.
