VerifiedShoprite Holdings, headquartered in Brackenfell in the Western Cape, is Africa’s largest supermarket retailer and one of the country’s biggest private funders of students. Its bursary pays for degrees and diplomas in the fields the group recruits from, adds vacation work and wellbeing support, and guarantees a job at the group after graduation through a work-back agreement.
About the Shoprite Holdings Bursary
- Fields: retail business management (diploma), accounting on the SAICA chartered accountant stream, supply chain and logistics (BCom logistics or supply chain, BSc operational research or related diplomas), and biological and agricultural sciences (horticulture, agronomy, agricultural economics, agribusiness and crop-focused degrees). IT and systems students enter the Shoprite SAP Academy, and the group occasionally funds food science, pharmacy and criminology.
- Value: R30 000 to R60 000 a year depending on the field and institution, covering tuition, books and an accommodation allowance.
- Extras: a monthly grocery allowance, wellbeing support through the group’s employee assistance programme, and paid vacation work.
- Work-back: one year of employment at the group for each year funded, in a role matching the field of study.
Shoprite Bursary eligibility requirements
- South African citizen aged 27 or under with a Matric certificate.
- Entering the second, third or fourth year of a relevant qualification at an accredited South African university, university of technology or college.
- At least a 60% overall average. Accounting applicants need 65% overall and 65% in accounting, auditing and taxation.
- Willing to do vacation work and sign the work-back agreement. Internal candidates are considered first, in line with the group’s employment equity goals.
How to apply for the Shoprite Bursary
- Register on the Shoprite bursary portal at shoprite-bursary.erecruit.co when applications open, or follow the “Apply now” link on the group’s youth opportunities page.
- Select the bursary stream for your field and complete the online form.
- Upload certified copies of your ID, Matric certificate and full tertiary academic record. Emailed applications are not accepted.
- Submit before the closing date. Shortlisted candidates are contacted within 30 days; if you hear nothing in that time, the application was unsuccessful.
