Informatics and Information Systems Bursaries in South Africa

Informatics and information systems are taught in a commerce or management faculty, not a science one. That single fact explains the difference between this qualification and computer science: you are being trained to work out what a business needs from a system, not to build the system.

The job titles it leads to are business analyst, systems analyst, IT project manager and consultant. The degree is usually a BCom.

Who funds it

Because it is a commerce qualification, the funders are the banks, insurers, consultancies and software houses that employ analysts, plus the state entities that run large systems. Several of them appear on our commerce bursaries page as well.

One to note: the UCT Department of Information Systems bursary is a departmental award rather than a national scheme, so the applicant pool is a single department. Faculty and departmental awards are the most under-applied funding in the country. Ask your own department what it has.
