The Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa (ILASA) recognizes the great power of education and the challenges faced by many aspiring landscape architects.

To close this gap, ILASA offers a prestigious bursary program aimed at supporting South African students who are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Landscape Architecture.

About the ILASA Bursary

The ILASA Bursary program focuses on nurturing talented individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and fostering diversity within the Landscape Architecture profession.

This aligns with the organization’s vision of transforming the built environment by ensuring it reflects the demographics of South Africa.

Bursary recipients receive partial financial support towards their tuition fees, registration fees, and, in exceptional cases, residence fees.

The maximum bursary amount per student is R40,000, disbursed directly to the tertiary institution or relevant service providers.

Beyond financial assistance, ILASA bursars gain valuable mentorship and networking opportunities, connecting them with established professionals in the field.

This support network empowers them to excel in their studies and transition smoothly into successful careers in Landscape Architecture.

ILASA Bursary Application Form

The application process for the ILASA Bursary typically opens annually, with details advertised on the ILASA website and other relevant platforms.

It’s important to check the website regularly for updates and application deadlines, as late submissions are not considered.

The application form generally requires the following information:

  2. Academic transcripts and certificates
  3. Proof of South African citizenship (or naturalization certificate)
  4. Letter of acceptance from a SACLAP-accredited university for a Landscape Architecture program
  5. Motivation letter outlining your financial need, academic achievements, and career aspirations in Landscape Architecture

For assistance with the application process, you can contact ILASA directly via email or phone number provided in the official application announcement.

The ILASA Bursary Requirements

To be eligible for the ILASA Bursary, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a South African citizen or naturalized citizen.
  2. Be enrolled in or seeking admission to a Landscape Architecture program at a SACLAP-accredited university in South Africa. These institutions include the University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Pretoria (UP), and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
  3. Demonstrate financial need and lack of alternative means to fund your studies.
  4. Have achieved a minimum academic average of 60% in your previous studies.
  5. Align your career aspirations with the goals of the ILASA Bursary program, which includes promoting diversity and social responsibility within the Landscape Architecture profession.

It’s important to note that fulfilling the minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee a bursary award.

Selection is based on a holistic assessment of your academic merit, financial need, career goals, and alignment with the program’s objectives.

The ILASA Bursary Closing Date

The ILASA Bursary application deadline typically falls in August or September each year. But the exact dates vary so referring to the official ILASA website and application announcement remains crucial.

ILASA hasn’t yet released this year’s application dates but since the closing date fell on 22 November 2023 last year, we can expect something similar this year too.

Missing the deadline will automatically disqualify your application so be sure to plan and prepare well in advance, ensuring all required documents are gathered and the application is submitted before the specified date.

For any inquiries or clarifications regarding the ILASA Bursary program, you can contact the institute through Nadia Funke on 084 804 8924 or through email: [email protected].
