Marula Platinum operates a platinum group metals (PGM) mine on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, about 35 kilometres north-west of Burgersfort in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune district. Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) owns 73% of Marula, and broad-based black economic empowerment partners hold the remaining 27%.

Implats, one of South Africa’s largest platinum producers, runs operations in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Canada. Implats says its purpose is to create a better future through the metals it produces, the way it does business and its performance. Implats points to platinum-catalysed fuel cells as a growing opportunity for zero-emission energy, which links Marula’s ore to the global push for decarbonisation. Implats released its annual results for the year ended 30 June 2026 on 3 September 2026.
Implats also names employee accommodation and living conditions as key strategic issues in its South African and Zimbabwean host communities.
Why Marula funds local students
Marula funds bursaries through its social and labour plan, which the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act requires mining companies to submit in exchange for the right to mine. The plan obliges Marula to invest in human resource development and local economic development for host communities, so Marula reserves bursaries for young people from communities near the mine.
What the bursary offers
The 2026 advert funded chemical, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical and mining engineering, geology, mine surveying and human resources at six universities: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, North-West (Potchefstroom), Witwatersrand and Limpopo. The bursary covers tuition, residence, meals, a living allowance and mentoring, plus a personal computer in second year. Bursars do vacation work at Marula and may receive job offers from Implats.
Marula has no application form; applicants hand-deliver certified documents to the stakeholder department or community desk at the mine. The 2026 round closed on 9 January 2026, so expect the 2027 advert in November or December 2026.

Ask the community desk which villages count as host communities, and read Marula’s social and labour plan commitments in Implats’ sustainability reporting. Students outside the host communities should apply to the group-wide Implats bursary instead.
