About the Organisation

The Department of Mineral Resources & Energy (DMRE) is a South African government department that regulates and develops the minerals and energy sectors. 

Its bursary programme is part of its “Learning Opportunities” initiatives to build skills in mining, energy, and related technical fields.

Scholarships under this programme are aimed at full-time study and cover many disciplines. These include:

  2. Chemical Engineering
  3. Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
  4. Electro-Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering
  5. Environmental Health and Management
  6. Geology
  7. Industrial Engineering
  8. Information and Communication Technology
  9. Materials Engineering
  10. Mechanical Engineering
  11. Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive)
  12. Mining Engineering
  13. Mining Survey
  14. Nuclear Engineering
  15. Rock Engineering

Benefits for Recipients

  • The bursary supports full-time studies for South African scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • It includes registration, tuition and possibly other academic costs as per the application form. (Exact benefit terms are specified in the application package.)

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  1. Be a South African citizen.
  2. Be currently in Grade 12 (Matric) or have completed Matric.
  3. Be from a disadvantaged social background.
  4. Be no older than 35 years of age.
  5. Be studying or plan to study full-time in one of the above-listed mining or energy-related programmes.

How to Apply

  1. Application forms can be downloaded from the DMRE website when the bursary call is open.
  2. Submit the completed application form along with required attachments to the Director of the DMRE or via email (as specified in the call). In past calls, the form was submitted to “The Director: Ms. Nondumiso Zulu” at DMRE, Matimba House, Pretoria, or to Private Bag X59, Arcadia.

Required Documents

From past calls, these documents have been required:

  1. Fully completed application form (the official one from DMRE, unaltered)
  2. Certified copy of South African ID document
  3. Proof of Matric results or final Matric certificate
  4. Proof of acceptance or registration if already in tertiary studies

Closing Date

For the 2026 bursary call, the closing date was 20 December 2026.

Any applications submitted after the specified deadline are not considered.
