SASSA Status Check: How to Track Your Grant

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a large organization in South Africa responsible for the country’s social security system, including distributing social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development.

SASSA started it in April 2005 to make things better. Before, each province helped people with money, but now SASSA helps everyone in the country.

SASSA ensures that people get the help they need without problems. They provide financial assistance for children, older people, and people with disabilities.

SASSA also gives out money when there’s a big problem, like during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many people in South Africa receive help from SASSA. In 2022, almost half of the country’s population received some help from SASSA.

SASSA uses special technology to ensure the money goes to the right people and stop anyone from cheating.

SASSA gives money to people in different ways. People can get their money from special places called points, certain shops, or ATMs. Some people can even get loans or buy airtime with their SASSA money.

Go to the SASSA website (https://www.sassa.gov.za/).
Click on the “Grant Status” link in the menu.
Enter your ID number and grant a reference number.
Click on the “Submit” button.
Your grant status will be displayed on the screen.

Who qualifies for SASSA?

Generally, only South African citizens are allowed to apply for SASSA; however, there are other criteria one must meet to gain access to this support program.

To qualify for a SASSA grant you must meet the income and asset criteria, and this applies both to the permanent grants and to the SRD R370 grant.

Each grant has its own income and asset limits. The SRD R370 grant uses a monthly income threshold, which SASSA checks against your bank account each month.

The SRD R370 grant is open to South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees and asylum seekers with valid documents, and you can apply on the SASSA SRD site.

From April 2026 a single caregiver applying for the Child Support Grant must earn less than R5,800 a month (R69,600 a year). For married couples the combined limit is R11,600 a month.

There is no asset test for the Child Support Grant; only income counts.

The Foster Child Grant does not require income or asset assessments. It’s available to caregivers appointed by a South African Court to care for foster children. You only need your court order documents and ID to apply.

For the Care Dependency Grant the limit is R24,000 a month for a single parent and R48,000 a month for a married couple, with no asset test.

For the Older Persons Grant a single applicant must earn less than R8,990 a month (R107,880 a year), and a married couple less than R17,980 a month combined. Assets must be under R1,524,600 for a single person and R3,049,200 for a couple; the home you live in is not counted.

The Disability Grant pays the same R2 400 and uses the same asset limits as the Older Persons Grant. Ask SASSA to confirm the income limit for your situation before you apply.

The income thresholds for the SASSA Older Person and Disability Grants are the same.

The War Veterans Grant uses the same asset limits. SASSA’s call centre, 0800 60 10 11, can confirm the income limit.

To qualify for a SASSA grant, ensure your income falls within the specified maximum limits for the grant you’re applying for. Review this information before starting the SASSA online application process to ensure eligibility.

How much is the SASSA grant?

SASSA reviews grant amounts each year, usually in April. Since April 2026 the amounts are: older persons, disability and care dependency R2 400, war veterans R2 420, foster child R1 290, child support and grant-in-aid R580, and the SRD R370.

The 2026 Budget extended the SRD grant to 31 March 2027, with R36.4 billion allocated for it.

Since April 2026, the child support grant pays R580 a month per child and grant-in-aid pays R580.

Payments will be made available through direct deposits, and updates on payment increases will be communicated through the official website.

The older persons grant now pays R2 400 a month, and R2 420 for beneficiaries aged 75 and older.

SASSA pays the older persons grant at R2 400 a month, and R2 420 for beneficiaries aged 75 and older, following the April 2026 increase.

The next payment dates, from SASSA’s 2026/27 schedule, are:

October 2026: older persons 2 October, disability 5 October, children’s grants 6 October
November 2026: older persons 3 November, disability 4 November, children’s grants 5 November
December 2026: older persons 2 December, disability 3 December, children’s grants 4 December

The grant amounts since 1 April 2026 are:

Beneficiaries aged 75 and above receive R2 420 a month, and those aged 60 to 74 receive R2 400.
War veterans grant: R2 420.
Disability grant: R2 400.
Care dependency grant: R2 400.

The Child Support Grant is R580 a month, with a R290 top-up for relatives caring for an orphan. The Foster Child Grant is R1 290, rising to R1 300 in October 2026.

Why is SASSA not paying?

Many reasons cause some applicants not to receive their grants; popular among these reasons is entering the wrong banking details.

The most common reason a payment does not arrive is incorrect or outdated banking details.
