SASSA Status Check August 2024
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a large organization in South Africa responsible for the country’s social security system, including distributing social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development.
SASSA started it in April 2005 to make things better. Before, each province helped people with money, but now SASSA helps everyone in the country.
SASSA ensures that people get the help they need without problems. They provide financial assistance for children, older people, and people with disabilities.
SASSA also gives out money when there’s a big problem, like during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many people in South Africa receive help from SASSA. In 2022, almost half of the country’s population received some help from SASSA.
SASSA uses special technology to ensure the money goes to the right people and stop anyone from cheating.
SASSA gives money to people in different ways. People can get their money from special places called points, certain shops, or ATMs. Some people can even get loans or buy airtime with their SASSA money.

Who qualifies for SASSA?
Generally, only South African citizens are allowed to apply for SASSA; however, there are other criteria one must meet to gain access to this support program.
To qualify for SASSA grants, you need to meet certain financial criteria, and this applies to permanent social grant recipients and those applying for the temporary SRD R350 grant. Your income and assets must be lower than specific thresholds set by SASSA.
Each SASSA grant has different income and asset limits. For example, the SRD R350 grant has a maximum monthly income limit of R624; your bank balance should remain below this limit.
The SRD R350 grant is available to all South African citizens and refugees with valid IDs or book numbers. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for this grant every month.
The maximum monthly income for single applicants or caregivers for the SASSA Child Support Grant is R4,000. For married couples, the combined monthly income should not exceed R8,000.
Permanent Child Support Grant recipients should not have an annual income exceeding R60,000, including bank balances and assets.
The Foster Child Grant does not require income or asset assessments. It’s available to caregivers appointed by a South African Court to care for foster children. You only need your court order documents and ID to apply.
Parents can apply for the Care Dependency Grant if their monthly income is less than R20,800. To be considered primary caregivers, the combined income of both parents should not exceed R41,600 per month.
The Old Age Grant’s maximum annual income for single recipients is R96,840. For couples, the combined monthly income should not exceed R16,140, and the yearly income should stay below R193,680.
Applicants for the SASSA Disability Grant should not earn more than R16,140 per month. For married applicants, the combined assets should not exceed an annual income of R193,680.
The income thresholds for the SASSA Older Person and Disability Grants are the same.
For the War Veterans Grant, the maximum annual income for single applicants is R86,280. Married applicants have a combined maximum yearly income threshold of R172,560.
To qualify for a SASSA grant, ensure your income falls within the specified maximum limits for the grant you’re applying for. Review this information before starting the SASSA online application process to ensure eligibility.

Why is SASSA not paying?
Many reasons cause some applicants not to receive their grants; popular among these reasons is entering the wrong banking details.
The primary issue for millions of South Africans who did not receive SASSA Grant Payments in January 2024 is “incorrect banking details.”
If you are also a victim, SASSA has requested affected beneficiaries to dial the Call Centre at 0800 60 10 11 for inquiry or visit the nearest SASSA offices to file complaints.
