Apply for the SASSA Child Support Grant Online

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers the Child Support Grant to help out caregivers of children under 18.

How Much is a Child Grant?

Since 1 April 2026 the Child Support Grant pays R580 a month per child, up from R560. A relative (such as a grandparent, aunt or uncle) caring for an orphan can also get the top-up of R290 a month, so R870 in total.

This amount is subject to review and adjustment based on inflation and other factors.

Where Can I Draw My Child Grant?

SASSA offers several options for receiving your Child Grant:

1. Cash at a SASSA pay point: This is the traditional method, where you collect the grant in cash from a designated SASSA payout location on specific dates.
2. Direct bank deposit: You can choose to have the grant deposited directly into your bank account. This method is convenient and eliminates the need to visit a pay point.
3. Postbank account: If you don’t have a bank account, SASSA can deposit the grant into a Postbank account for you.

When applying online, you’ll be able to choose your preferred payment method.

How Do I Check My Child’s SASSA Grant?

There are two main ways to check your child’s SASSA grant status:

1. Online: register on the SASSA Services Portal at services.sassa.gov.za with your own ID number and a cellphone number in your name, choose the Child Support Grant and upload the documents it asks for. The SRD website is only for the R370 SRD grant.
2. SASSA offices: You can visit your nearest SASSA office to inquire about your child’s grant status. Be prepared to provide identification documents for yourself and your child.

Applying for the Child Grant Online

Here’s a quick overview of the online application process:

1. Visit the SASSA website and go to the Child Grant application section.
2. You’ll need to create a SASSA account if you haven’t already. The process is straightforward and requires basic information.
3. Once logged in, complete the online Child Grant application form. Ensure you have all the required documentation readily available, such as your child’s birth certificate or ID number (if applicable), proof of income (if applicable), and your banking details if opting for a direct deposit.
4. Submit your application electronically. SASSA will process your application and notify you of the outcome via SMS or email.
