VerifiedW&RSETA is the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority, the SETA that collects skills levies from shops, wholesalers and distributors. At the University of Johannesburg it funds the W&R SETA Leadership Chair: Gauteng, based in the Department of Marketing Management, and through the Chair it pays for Master’s and PhD students who research the retail and wholesale trade.
It is a research bursary for postgraduates in marketing and retail, not a general UJ bursary and not a bursary for water or environmental studies, whatever other sites say.
What the bursary pays for
UJ says the bursary covers the full annual study fees, with extra money for data collection and language editing of the dissertation or thesis. It does not mention a living allowance, so plan your own living costs.

Who can apply
- South African citizens and permanent residents.
- Master’s: an Honours degree in marketing or retailing with an average of at least 60%, and at least 60% for Research Methodology at NQF level 8.
- PhD: a Master’s degree in marketing or retailing passed with at least 65%, and at least 60% for Research Methodology at NQF level 8.
- An approved Master’s or PhD proposal in one of the preferred areas, and proof of registration at UJ.
How applications work
New students first apply to the Department of Marketing Management for a Master’s or PhD place. Once the Department Research and Ethics Committee accepts the proposal, email wrseta@uj.ac.za and the Chair sends the bursary documents.
Students already registered for a Master’s or PhD download the Masters and Doctoral bursary form from the Chair’s page and email it, with the documents the form lists, to wrseta@uj.ac.za with the subject “WRSETA Postgraduate Bursary Application – Your Full Name”.
In the last call UJ published, current students had until 31 July and new enrolments until 31 October. That call was for 2024 and the page had not been updated for a later year when we checked, so confirm with the Chair before you apply.
