NSFAS Application Dates

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) plays a major role in enabling South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education.

In order for these students to be able to apply for and track their NSFAS application, it is important that they are aware of all the NSFAS application dates.

NSFAS Application Dates

The application window for NSFAS funding for the 2024 academic year closed on January 31, 2024.

It’s important to remember that applications for NSFAS funding are for the upcoming academic year, not the current one.

So, if you’re planning to begin your studies in 2025, you’ll need to wait for applications to open again, likely sometime in the second half of 2024.

These are some of the key NSFAS application dates for 2024:

  1. Application Opening Date: Applications open around August/September of the preceding year. (The exact date for 2025 is yet to be released).
  2. Application Closing Date: January 31, 2024 (for 2024 applications)

What is the NSFAS cycle for 2024?

While NSFAS applications for 2024 are closed, understanding the cycle can help you plan for future applications.

This is what the NSFAS cycle is typically like:

  1. August/September (Previous Year): Applications open for the following academic year.
  2. January (Current Year): Application deadline.
  3. After January: NSFAS processes applications and makes funding decisions. Applicants can check their application status on the myNSFAS portal.
  4. Registration Period (Current Year): Successful applicants receive funding confirmation and can register at their chosen institution.

These are general timelines, and there may be variations. Always refer to the official NSFAS website for the latest updates.

Are NSFAS appeals open for 2024?

If your application for 2024 funding was unsuccessful, you’ll be informed and may have the opportunity to appeal the decision within a specific timeframe.

The NSFAS appeals for the 2024 cycle are currently closed. The appeals portal closed on 15 February, 2024.

How do you know if NSFAS has accepted you?

NSFAS will communicate their funding decision directly to you through your myNSFAS portal.

You’ll also receive an SMS notification. The portal will display your funding status, which could be:

  1. Approved: You’ve been awarded NSFAS funding.
  2. Awaiting Application Data: More information is needed from you to process your application.
  3. Unsuccessful: You haven’t been awarded funding this time. You may be eligible to appeal.

How long does it take for NSFAS to respond to appeals?

NSFAS appeals processing times can vary depending on the volume of applications received.

It usually takes several weeks after the submission of your appeal to hear back from NSFAS.

You can check your application status on the myNSFAS portal for the most up-to-date information.

What does awaiting application data mean in NSFAS?

If your application status shows “awaiting application data,” it means NSFAS requires additional information from you to complete the assessment process.

This could be missing documents, income verification issues, or some details needing further clarification.
