The UIF is a social security program in South Africa that provides financial support to unemployed workers who have contributed to the fund.

UIF Status Check

A UIF status check allows you to see the progress of your unemployment claim.

This is important, especially if you’ve recently submitted a claim or are expecting a payout.

There are three main ways to check your UIF claim status:

  1. UIF Online Portal:  The Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) provides a user-friendly online portal called uFiling. By registering on uFiling: uFiling.labour.gov.za, you can access a range of UIF services, including checking your claim status. Once logged in, go to the “Claims” section and select “Track Claim Status.” You’ll need your ID number and claim reference number to proceed.
  2. USSD Code:  For a quick and convenient option, you can use the USSD code *134*843#. This will prompt you with a menu on your mobile phone. Select “Claims and Payment Status” and follow the on-screen instructions. You’ll be required to enter your ID number to access your claim details.
  3. Department of Labour Contact Centre: If you’re unable to access online services or prefer personal assistance, you can contact the Department of Labour Contact Centre at 0800 030 011. Be prepared to provide your ID number and any relevant claim details to the agent.

UIF Balance Check

Knowing your UIF contribution balance is essential to determine your eligibility for benefits and the potential payout amount.

Here’s how to check your UIF balance:

  1. uFiling Portal: Similar to checking your claim status, you can access your contribution balance through the uFiling portal. After logging in, scroll to the “Employee” section and select “Contribution History” or “Statement of Account.” This will display your UIF contributions made by your current and past employers.
  2. Employer: Your employer is legally obligated to submit monthly UIF contributions on your behalf. You can request a copy of your latest payslip, which should reflect any UIF deductions made from your salary.
  3. Department of Labour Contact Centre: The contact centre can also assist you with obtaining your UIF balance. However, providing accurate information might take longer compared to online methods.
