NSFAS closes the financial gap for hardworking but needy individuals and allows them to access and succeed in their tertiary education.

If you’re aiming to pursue post-school studies but lack the necessary funds, NSFAS could be of great help to you.

NSFAS Funding Eligibility Requirements

Before you begin with the application process, it’s important to understand if you meet the NSFAS eligibility criteria.

These are some of the main requirements:

  1. South African Citizenship or Permanent Residency: You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident with a valid permit.
  2. Your household income must fall below the NSFAS threshold. The exact threshold varies depending on whether a household member has a disability. In 2024, the threshold was R350,000 for most applicants and R600,000 for households with disabled members.
  3. SASSA Recipients: If you are a SASSA grant recipient, you automatically qualify for NSFAS funding based on financial need. No further income verification is required.
  4. For continuing students, you’ll need to meet the academic progress requirements set by NSFAS.
  5. NSFAS funding is primarily for undergraduate qualifications at public universities and TVET colleges. NSFAS does not fund postgraduate studies or private institutions.

How to appeal NSFAS Funding decisions

NSFAS will assess your application based on your eligibility and supporting documents and you’ll be notified of the outcome via your myNSFAS account.

But your NSFAS decisions can be appealed if you believe there’s been an error in the assessment process.

The appeals process usually involves submitting additional documentation to support your claim.

What are the NSFAS application deadlines?

The application window for NSFAS funding for the 2024 academic year closed on January 31, 2024.

If you missed this deadline, you’ll have to wait until the application period opens again for the 2025 academic year.

NSFAS will communicate the application outcome via your myNSFAS account. It’s recommended to monitor your account regularly for updates.
