VerifiedNetflix has put money behind African screen talent in two ways: the Creative Equity Scholarship Fund, which pays for film and television students at partner universities across Southern Africa, and the ScreenCraft Pathways traineeship, which puts young South Africans on real productions. Both are administered by Tshikululu Social Investments.
About the Netflix Creative Equity Scholarship Fund
- A US$1 million fund, about R15 million, for African creatives in the Southern African Development Community.
- Covers tuition fees, accommodation, study materials and living expenses.
- Level: the final year of an undergraduate degree or the first year of postgraduate study in a film or television discipline, at selected partner institutions.
- Countries: South Africa, Angola, Botswana, the Comoros, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Netflix ScreenCraft Pathways
- A traineeship rather than a scholarship: thirty participants get paid, practical experience in local screen production.
- Run by Netflix with the Gauteng Film Commission and the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority.
- Administered by Tshikululu Social Investments, which publishes the criteria and deadlines for each intake.

- Watch tshikululu.org.za for the current Netflix call, whether it is the scholarship fund or the traineeship.
- Check which partner institutions and disciplines the round covers before applying; the scholarship is limited to selected schools.
- Apply online through the link Tshikululu publishes, with your academic records, proof of registration and the portfolio or motivation the call requires.
