The Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA) is a South African organization dedicated to fostering education and training within the safety and security industry.
Formed by merging two previous SETAs (POSLEC SETA and DIDTETA), SASSETA is one of 21 SETAs tasked with overseeing skills development in their respective sectors.
By providing bursaries, learnerships, internships, and apprenticeships, SASSETA aims to create a skilled and qualified workforce within the safety and security domain.
About the SASSETA Bursary
The SASSETA Bursary offers financial aid to unemployed South African citizens pursuing specific qualifications relevant to the safety and security sector.
This targeted approach aims to address the industry’s skills gap while empowering individuals to contribute to a safer South Africa.
The bursary covers a range of approved fields, including:
- Artisan and Engineering Programmes aligned with the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan
- Clinical Social Work
- IT Programme Analysis
- IT Programme Development
- IT Software DevelopmentÂ
- LLB (Bachelor of Laws)
- Nursing
- Paralegal Studies
- Pharmacy
- Psychology
- Security Management
The bursary amount varies depending on your study mode:
- Full-time studies: Up to R80,000 per year, covering tuition fees, textbooks, on-campus or university-approved accommodation, and meals.
- Part-time or distance learning: Up to R35,000 per year, covering tuition fees and textbooks.
The bursary is awarded for one academic year but can be renewed for the full duration of your studies, subject to maintaining a minimum of 60% average across all modules, including your major subject.
SASSETA Bursary Eligibility Criteria
Before applying for the SASSETA Bursary, ensure you meet the following minimum requirements:
- South African citizen
- Between 18 and 35 years old
- Completed Matric (Grade 12)
- Studying or registered to study in one of the listed fields above
- Registered or accepted at a recognized public university, university of technology, or public TVET college in South Africa (private institutions are only eligible if the course is not offered publicly)
- Household income of no more than R600,000 per year
- Unemployed
- Not currently participating in any other SASSETA-funded program (internship, learnership, or skills program) within the current financial year
Preference will be given to:
- Students with disabilities
- Female students
- Students without existing bursary funding or NSFAS support
SASSETA Bursary Application Requirements
Applications for the SASSETA Bursary are submitted online.
Along with the completed application form, you must submit clear copies of the following supporting documents:
- Certified copy of your ID document (not older than 6 months)
- Certified copy of your Matric certificate or statement of results
- Proof of acceptance/registration for the 2023 academic year (on institution letterhead)
- Certified copies of your parents’ or guardians’ ID documents
- Proof of income for your parents or guardians (latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed/self-employed, proof of pension or grant)
All supporting documents must be under 20 MB each.
