Exxaro is a large mining and resources company operating in South Africa. 

Through this bursary, the company invests in students from communities where it works. 

The objective is to develop future professionals in mining, engineering, and other critical sectors. 

Fields of Study Covered by the Exxaro Bursary

The bursary is offered in several streams.

  1. The Feeder Scheme covers core mining‑industry disciplines: civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, and mine surveying.
  2. The Social Scheme supports students from Exxaro‑host communities studying high‑demand fields such as information technology/data sciences, education (English/Maths/Science), medicine, optometry, audiology, nursing, occupational/speech therapy, social work, psychology, and biokinetics.
  3. The Students Living with Disabilities stream covers students who have a disability and live in a community where Exxaro operates. They may study any discipline.

Exxaro Bursary Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet all the criteria that apply to the specific stream and overall programme.

Basic eligibility for all streams includes:

  1. Must be a South African citizen.
  2. Must reside in or be from a community where Exxaro operates (especially for the Social Scheme and Disabilities stream).
  3. Must register/ be registered full‑time at a recognised and accredited South African tertiary institution (university or TVET as applicable) for the upcoming academic year.
  4. For the Feeder Scheme: pursue a minimum 4‑year undergraduate degree (NQF Level 8) in one of the listed mining or engineering disciplines.
  5. For Social Scheme: pursue a minimum 3‑year degree/diploma in the listed fields.
  6. For the Disabilities stream: living with a disability, full‑time studies in any field at a recognised institution.

What the Bursary Covers

Recipients of the Exxaro bursary may receive support for:

  1. Tuition fees and prescribed study materials.
  2. Residence/housing and meals were required.
  3. Books, other learning materials, and sometimes a laptop or tablet.
  4. Additional allowances such as pocket money or living allowance. After graduation, bursars may enter Exxaro’s Professional‑in‑Training or graduate development programme.

  1. Visit the Exxaro “Student Hub” or “Careers” section on the Exxaro website to find the bursary application.
  2. Download or complete the bursary application form. Include certified copies of documents: ID, matric certificate (or latest results if still in matric), tertiary transcripts if applicable, proof of residence, proof of disability (where needed).
  3. Submit the completed form along with all required documentation by the closing date. Late or incomplete applications may be disqualified.
  4. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for interviews or additional assessments. Selection aligns with Exxaro’s Employment Equity policy and community development objectives.
