FEM Bursary Requirements, Application and Closing Dates

The FEM Bursary is a funding initiative aimed at South African students who wish to study in disciplines deemed critical by FEM, particularly Engineering, Built Environment and Health Sciences. 

The programme prioritises applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. 

Fields of Study Covered by the FEM Bursary 

The bursary supports full-time undergraduate studies in these priority fields:

  1. Engineering (all disciplines)
  2. Built Environment (including Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Urban and Regional Planning)
  3. Health Sciences
    The focus reflects FEM’s strategic aim to develop skills for sectors such as infrastructure, occupational health and safety, and the built environment.

FEM Bursary Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria (based on top listings):

  1. Must be a South African citizen.
  2. Must be studying full-time toward an undergraduate qualification in one of the eligible fields at a recognised or approved public university in South Africa.
  3. Must have completed at least their first year of study (first-year entrants and postgraduate students are excluded).
  4. Combined household income must not exceed R 360 000 per annum, and applicants must be from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  5. Applicants must be in good financial standing with their institution (no outstanding fees from previous years).
  6. A strong academic record is required.
  7. No dual funding is permitted (the bursary cannot be combined with another full bursary).

What the FEM Bursary Covers

According to current descriptions:

  1. Full tuition fees at the approved institution for the qualifying year of study.
  2. Prescribed textbooks and study materials.
  3. Monthly living stipend and possibly accommodation and meals (subject to FEM’s discretion and the applicant’s needs).
  4. The bursary aims to relieve financial pressure so that recipients can focus on their studies.

FEM Bursary Application Process

  1. Visit the FEM bursary portal to start the online application.
  2. Upload certified supporting documents, including: South African ID, most recent academic transcript or progress report, parents’/guardians’ ID and proof of income (payslips or affidavit), proof of registration for any other dependents studying, death or divorce certificates if applicable.
  3. Apply before the closing date. Incomplete or late submissions will not be accepted.
  4. Shortlisted applicants may be required to complete further documentation or attend interviews as required by FEM.
