About Agar‑Hamilton Trust
The Agar‑Hamilton Trust was established by the Will of John Augustus Ion Agar‑Hamilton, a historian and Anglican priest.
Since 1984, the Trust has provided financial assistance to academically gifted South African students in need.
The bursary reflects Agar‑Hamilton’s values of education, service, and faith.
Fields of Study Funded
Funding is available for full‑time study at South African schools, colleges, or universities.
All fields are eligible, including but not limited to commerce, engineering, sciences, humanities, and vocational courses.
The bursary is typically renewable annually based on academic performance.
Benefits for Recipients
The bursary covers a portion of tuition and may include allowances for accommodation, books, and living expenses.
Award amounts are determined, case by case, by the Trustees.
The award is granted initially for one year and may be renewed based on satisfactory academic progress.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- South African citizens under 25 years old as of 1 January 2026
- Male
- English‑speaking with predominantly British descent (e.g., through grandparents or parents)
- Recognised and active communicant in an Anglican church
- Must be currently in Matric or already registered at a tertiary institution
- Demonstrate a strong academic record and genuine financial need
Applications not meeting all criteria will be disqualified.

- Complete the form carefully and attach all required documents.
