About the Organisation
The Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA) was established in 1961.
It promotes research, training, and professional engagement in agricultural and rural economics across South Africa.
AEASA administers the BD Nomvete Memorial Trust Fund to support postgraduate research in agricultural economics.
Fields of Study Funded
The bursary provides support for full‑time PhD study in Agricultural Economics or an approved related discipline at accredited South African universities.
Research topics should address agricultural or socio‑economic issues relevant to Southern Africa.
Benefits for Recipients
Selected scholars receive R50,000 per academic year, renewable for up to three years, subject to academic progress.
Funding is granted annually, and continuation depends on submission of supervisor‑endorsed progress reports.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, you must meet all the following:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be 35 years old or younger
- Be registered or accepted for full‑time PhD study in Agricultural Economics or related discipline
- Study at a recognized, accredited South African university
- Meet your institution’s admission standards
- Preference may be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, especially females

Include certified copies of:
- South African ID document
- Passport-sized photo
- Academic transcripts and most recent results
- Proof of registration or admission for your PhD programme
- A detailed research proposal signed by your proposed supervisor
- Curriculum Vitae
- Two testimonials from university lecturers or academic referees
- Motivational letter explaining your academic ability, career plans, financial need, and relevance of proposed research
