About the Auditor-General of South Africa Bursary

The Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) is the nation’s supreme audit institution, tasked with auditing government financial operations and upholding public accountability. 

It established its bursary programme to support the development of skilled Chartered Accountants committed to public service.

Fields of Study Funded

This bursary supports full-time South African students studying towards a Chartered Accountancy qualification. Eligible programmes include:

  • BCom Accounting (CA stream)
  • Bachelor of Accounting (CA stream)
  • BCompt

Studies must be undertaken at a SAICA-accredited university.

Benefits for Recipients

Successful bursars receive comprehensive financial support covering:

  2. University accommodation

Additionally, graduates are required to serve their articles or enter into a training contract with AGSA, in line with the bursary agreement.

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants must meet all of the following:

  1. South African citizenship
  2. Enrolled (or intending to enroll) full-time in a SAICA-accredited Chartered Accountancy programme
  3. Academic-level requirements vary by study year:
    • Matric applicants (1st-year entry):
      • University entrance exemption
      • Minimum 60% in Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) and English
    • 1st-year applicants (entering 2nd year):
      • Minimum 60% in Financial Accounting in 1st year
      • Minimum 60% in Matric English and Mathematics
    • 2nd-year applicants (entering 3rd year):
      • Minimum 60% in Financial and Management Accounting
    • Final-year applicants (entering CTA/postgrad):
      • Minimum 55% in all core modules
      • Must have CTA programme acceptance
  4. Strong English communication, leadership potential, and interpersonal skills

How to Apply

  1. Register a profile on the AGSA bursary portal and complete the online application.
  2. Upload supporting documents in PDF format (max 2 MB each).
  3. Submit before the (expected) Mid-October 2025 closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Required Documents

Upload certified copies of:

  • South African ID document
  • Academic records based on your current study year:
    • Matric applicants: Grade 11 final results and Matric mid-year results, plus university acceptance letter
    • 1st/2nd year students: Matric certificate and full academic record
    • Final-year applicants: Full academic record and CTA acceptance letter

Ensure all documents are legible PDFs and not larger than 2 MB.

Closing Date

The confirmed deadline for the 2025 academic year was 15 October 2024. 

The 2026 closing date is expected to be around the same timeframe: mid-October 2025. 

Only applications received before the confirmed deadline will be considered.
