If so, the City of Johannesburg EMS Bursary might be the stepping stone you need.
About the Bursary
The bursary is offered by the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services.
It supports youth in Johannesburg by funding studies in critical EMS fields.
It also appears that EMS collaborates with some fire stations to receive applications.
Fields of Study Funded
Eligible qualifications include:
- National Diploma in Fire Technology (e.g. at Tshwane University of Technology)
- National Diploma in Emergency Medical Care
- Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Medical Care at the University of Johannesburg
Benefits for Recipients
- Covers tuition and registration fees, and prescribed books and study materials.
- Might cover other study‐related costs (depending on need and according to what’s submitted).
Eligibility Criteria
You generally need to satisfy all of the following:
- Be a South African citizen permanently residing in the Johannesburg metropolitan area.
- Be between approximately 17 and 25 years old.
- Have completed Matric or be in Matric.
- Have at least a “D” symbol or minimum pass in Mathematics and Science in Matric.
- Be physically fit.
- Demonstrate financial need; e.g., household income of no more than about R15,000/month in many adverts.

- Or hand-deliver to one of the specific Fire Stations in Johannesburg: Florida Park, Ivory Park, Jabulani, Orange Farm, Dube, Alexandria, Diepsloot, Eldorado Park, etc. Also, Public Safety Headquarters or Fire Stations.
Required Documents
You must include certified copies of:
- South African identity document (ID)
- Most recent academic record (Matric certificate or if in Matric, recent results)
- Proof of residence in Johannesburg (utility bill, rates statement, etc.)
- Proof of parents’/guardians’ income or affidavit if unemployed
Closing Date
The closing date for applications is 29 November (of the preceding year of study).
For example, for the 2026 year, applications would likely close on 29 November 2025.
