What does the Fulbright Foreign Student Program cover?

The award typically covers tuition, living expenses, health insurance and visa support for the duration of the programme (usually up to two years for a Master’s or Doctoral degree). 

Fulbright Foreign Student Program Eligibility requirements 

To qualify you must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident of South Africa who has held permanent residency for at least five years.
  2. For a Master’s degree application: hold either a four‑year bachelor’s degree (or BTech) or a three‑year bachelor’s degree plus an honours year.
  3. For a Doctoral degree application: hold a Master’s degree.
  4. For a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR) placement: must be currently registered for a PhD at a South African university and the research placement will be at a U.S. institution for one year.
  5. Study fields: Most academic disciplines are eligible. Note: MBA programmes and clinical contact medical or veterinary programmes are excluded.
  6. Applicants must not already be studying full‑time in the U.S. or have held U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residence.

Application process for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program

  1. Obtain and read the country‑specific Application Guidelines for South Africa from the official U.S. Embassy or via the National Research Foundation (NRF) website.
  2. Prepare required documents: certified degree certificates and transcripts; curriculum vitae; two or more academic references; English proficiency evidence if required. Additionally for VSR: proof of PhD registration.
  3. Submit the online application via the designated portal by the deadline. Include your study or research proposal and institutional acceptance where applicable. (For the U.S. institution you plan to attend).
  4. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews (usually by U.S. Embassy staff and Fulbright Commission) and, upon final selection, will receive a grant offer and pre‑departure briefing.
  5. Upon award, you must commit to the terms of the grant including enrolment at the U.S. institution and often a return to South Africa at the end of the award period.
