Pretoria, South Africa – 15 September 2025 – The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed two major developments for South African students. The scheme has officially opened applications for NSFAS bursaries in 2026, while also announcing that the R5,200 student allowance for September 2025 is available, with October marking the final opportunity for eligible students to secure this critical funding.

R5,200 NSFAS Allowance – September and October 2025

NSFAS has urged students to act immediately to claim the R5,200 student allowance before the October deadline. This allowance plays a vital role in covering living expenses such as accommodation, meals, transport, and study materials, ensuring that students can continue their studies without financial barriers.

Failure to update details, confirm enrollment, or submit outstanding documents could result in missed payments. With rising living costs across South Africa, NSFAS stressed the importance of timely action.

“The October 2025 allowance is a lifeline for many students. We encourage all beneficiaries to check their NSFAS profiles, update their banking details, and resolve any outstanding issues before it is too late,” NSFAS said in an official statement.

Steps to Secure the R5,200 Allowance

To claim the allowance, students must:

  • Log in to the NSFAS portal and verify academic and personal information.
  • Ensure banking details are accurate and active.
  • Upload missing documents, including proof of registration.
  • Monitor SMS, email, and institutional portals for NSFAS updates.

Common delays are caused by incorrect banking details, outdated contact information, or incomplete documentation. NSFAS has urged beneficiaries to act quickly to avoid disruptions.

NSFAS Applications for 2026 Now Open

Alongside the allowance update, Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela announced that NSFAS applications for 2026 are now officially open.

The bursary scheme is available to students from poor and working-class households, with funding covering tuition fees, accommodation, transport, food, and study materials.

“Education is about expanding opportunities for young South Africans. By applying early, students secure their future and avoid last-minute complications. NSFAS is here to support those who need it most,” said Minister Manamela.
