What Is the SAPS Police Trainee Intake 2026?

The SAPS Police Trainee Programme trains selected candidates to become law enforcement officers under the Basic Police Development Learning Programme.

Successful recruits receive formal training at SAPS academies, covering policing law, physical defence, community safety, and crime prevention.

The programme prepares trainees for deployment as police constables after completion.

Who Can Apply for SAPS Recruitment 2026?

To apply for SAPS police trainee positions, you must be a South African citizen with a valid ID document.

Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old at the time of application.

You must not have a criminal record or pending cases and must pass SAPS fitness, medical, and psychological assessments.

Fluency in English and at least one other official language is required, and you must be willing to serve anywhere in South Africa.

What Qualifications Are Required?

A Senior Certificate (Grade 12 or Matric) is mandatory for SAPS police trainee applications.

Applicants who have completed tertiary qualifications such as diplomas or degrees may be considered, but Grade 12 remains the basic minimum.

In many cases, having a valid driver’s licence gives applicants an advantage because many SAPS duties involve driving.

Where Do You Get SAPS Police Trainee Application Forms?

The official application forms for the SAPS Police Trainee recruitment can be obtained from the SAPS careers website at www.saps.gov.za under the “Careers” or “Police Trainees 2026” section.

SAPS also provides official downloadable forms like the SAPS 15/1 police trainee application form on its careers portal. These forms are free and must be filled in accurately.

Never pay anyone for an application form, as SAPS recruitment is free of charge.

How Do You Complete the SAPS Application Form?

When completing the SAPS police trainee application form, use black ink and block letters. Provide accurate personal and contact details.

Attach certified copies of your ID document, Matric certificate, proof of residence, CV, and any other qualifications you have.

Some provincial guides may also ask for a recent passport-size photo.

Double-check every field before signing the form and keep copies of your completed documents.

How Do You Submit Your Application?

Once the form is completed and all supporting documents are attached, submit your application using the method indicated by SAPS for the 2026 intake.

In recent recruitments, applications were submitted online through the SAPS e-Recruitment portal on the official website.

Follow the portal instructions to upload your form and documents, then submit before the closing date.

If SAPS announces in-person submission options in specific areas, those details will be published on the careers page.

Always confirm submission guidelines directly on the SAPS site.

When Does SAPS Recruitment 2026 Open and Close?

Official SAPS recruitment dates for the 2026 intake are usually announced on the SAPS careers page.

Past recruitment drives opened in mid-year (around June) and remained open for several weeks before closing.

For example, a recent SAPS intake had a closing date of 18 July 2025 for the 2025/2026 phase.

Training for successful candidates typically begins in early 2026. Confirm the exact dates on the official SAPS website before applying.

What Happens After You Apply?

After submission, SAPS screens applications to confirm eligibility.

Shortlisted candidates receive invitations to undergo physical fitness tests, medical evaluations, psychological assessments, background checks, and interviews.

These assessments ensure applicants meet SAPS standards for fitness, mental readiness, and ethical suitability.

Training at a SAPS academy begins once all assessments are completed and selections are finalised.
